3 Tools to Keep Your Software Updated

6 May, 2008 10:46 am

You probably use a hundred various types of software tools on your PC. Using (and more often showing-off) your software arsenal is one thing; keeping them updated, with the latest patches and fixes, is quite another. A non-updated software is like stale bread, it neither looks good nor works properly.

Some software have inbuilt automatic updaters than scan the servers for any new update and download it themselves. The others have to be manually updated; it's OK if you use few third party tools, but again if you are like me, you may well be 80 years old before you manually finish updating all your software! So here are some update checkers, that ease your job by finding new updates and notifying you of the same.

Google Updater

You have probably heard of Google Pack, a bundle of some quite a few free and useful tools (read more about Google Pack). Now, this Pack additionally comes with the Google Updater, which runs silently in the background and checks for updates of software included in the Pack. Not only this, Updater will download and install the updates as well, provided you allow it.

As Google Pack contains 13 tools covering almost all important software categories, The Updater can conveniently take a big load off your head. If you have already have some Google Pack tools on your computer, you can tick them off while downloading it. Home

Available for: Windows XP / Vista, Mac OS X

FileHippo Update Checker

I am a big fan of the FileHippo download site, as it is uncluttered, always updated and really fast. FileHippo houses about more than a hundred free and non-free software (anyone got exact numbers?) and you are bound to some of those on your computer. To keep those software that are available in FileHippo (and you have on your computer as well), you can use FileHippo 's Free Update Checker. This tiny tool is only about 100KB big and takes seconds to run. Once installed this tool will check FileHippo 's constantly updated database for any new versions / releases and open your default browser so that you can download the update.

It's not as convenient to use as Google Updater, but that's OK considering that it can cover a lot more software on your computer. The program has been in public beta for some time now and is pretty stable now. Home
Available for: Windows 98 + (requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0)

VersionTracker Pro (Not free)

CNET Download.com has released this power packed software + driver update checker for your PC. VersionTracker Pro scans your hardware and software to find the best possible updates and downloads them as well. The software checker is based on Download.com 's enormous database, so you are virtually assured of getting updates for ALL your software (unless you have got some alien world tool). VTP also downloads driver updates (something which we all ignore so adamantly) which means lesser hardware failures and better performance of your system. VTP isn't free, but it's worth every cent of the 30 bucks that it costs. Home | Download.com

Available for: Windows 2000+, Mac OS X 10.2+
