The idea of strumming along to rock classics on a cheap-looking, half-size plastic toy guitar may have real axe-wielding muso-nerds sneering into their wispy facial hair, but who cares -- the Guitar Hero games are ridiculously enjoyable.

And praise be to the Gods of Metal, for the third instalment is no different. New developer Neversoft has chosen the sensible option by keeping the core game exactly the same a s in previous GH titles: coloured "notes" travel down a 3D fretboard, and using the guitar controller -- a wireless Gibson Les Paul replica, this time -- you have to "play" them at the correct time by holding down the correct coloured button and strumming.

The track listing features a huge haul of classics, including "Paint it Black", "Paranoid", "Black Magic Woman" and "Sunshine of your Love" alongside newer fare from Muse, Queens of the Stone Age and The Killers. As always, there are a number of bonus tracks to unlock (including The Stone Roses' "She Bangs the Drums") and Xbox 360 and PS3 owners will be ab le to download more tracks in the weeks to come (for a small fee).

This time, many of the tracks are the original master recording rather than a cover version -- the makers even persuaded The Sex Pistols to re-record "Anarchy in the UK" just for the game.

New features come in the form of Crossroads-style guitar duels in which the idea is to make your opponent (either a mate or, in the single player game, a guitar legend like Slash or Tom Morello) fail by affecting their performance, as well as online multiplayer. Now you can actually battle a buddy over Xbox Live or PSN, or play through the Career in co-op mode.

Simply put, while it doesn't revolutionise the series, GHIII is another must-have title.
